When you plan a long car journey, it’s nice to know that your tyres have plenty of tread left; that the petrol tank’s full or the battery fully charged, the engine’s big enough and your windscreen washer bottle is full.

As you go, you keep an eye on these things, knowing that you may well have to top them up or address them at some point in your journey. But on the whole you can be comfortable that you’re going to make it safely and on time.
