Willpower, overload and deadlines

I know what I need to do to make myself healthier.

I know exactly what foods to eat to nurture my gut and from there the rest of my body. I know how much exercise to do and what kind of exercises I should be doing to maintain strength and mobility.

I know all of that, but still, when a cake, or a trifle, or a bacon sandwich is in front of me, I’ll eat it. When it’s a little bit rainy, I won’t go for that walk.

Why is that?

Well I think there are two reasons:

Willpower is part of our mental ‘battery’ – we only have so much capacity in any one day. If I use up that day’s storage on thinking, decisions, absorbing information, there’s not much left in there to resist temptation.

So the first reason is simply overload. The irony is that a lot of that overload comes from planning, scoring and cooking meals.

The other reason is another trick we humans play on ourselves:

When I see that cake, I think to myself “I can carry on tomorrow, I can get healthy later.” It’s not that I don’t care enough about the outcome I want, it’s that I think I have plenty of time ahead of me to get there.

That’s why having an external deadline can help – the wedding you need to dress up for, the operation you need to be fit for, the marathon you’re going to run, the baby that’s going to arrive ready or not – but the fact that you’ve waited so long to get started makes the job of hitting that goal in time much, much harder.

It’s the same for your business. You know what you need to do to make your business easier to run, easier to scale. You need to get everything out of your head and into the heads of the people who work with you.

But you’re too busy *doing* to even think about offloading it all, and you can see your business life stretching far ahead of you: “I can start that tomorrow, I can delegate later, there’s plenty of time.”

What if there isn’t plenty of time?

That’s what I’m here for. To help you get through that big change faster than you could on your own.

What if you wanted to get started now and make the change gradually, before you need to?

That’s also what I’m here for. To help you make changes at a sustainable pace.

What if you’re not sure exactly where to start, or how to go about it?

I’m here for that too. To help you to simply get started, and work out the journey as we go.

Discipline makes Daring possible.

Ask me how.
