What your customers really want

The same things you want, of course:

  • Agency – to make their own ‘me-shaped’ dent in the universe.
  • Mastery – to learn and master (even teach) new skills.
  • Autonomy – to be free to choose how they make their dent.
  • Purpose – to do this for something bigger than themselves.
  • Community – to do all of the above with ‘people like us’.
    • Status – to know (and for others to know) where they stand in their communities.

The trick now, for any business, is to work out how to give your customers as much as possible of what they really want, without doing them or anyone else, or even anything else any harm in the process.

I don’t know what that looks like any more than you do right now. It’s going to take some innovative thinking, some ingenuity and most of all, humanity.

I can tell you what it doesn’t look like though – more stuff.
